About ‘Golden Monkeys of Mgahinga - Gold among greenery’ by Rick Massar

The dense bamboo forests of Mgahinga National Park are home to golden monkeys, one of Africa's rarest and most charismatic monkey species. They get their name from their beautiful fur, which shines in shades of gold, copper and black when sunlight falls through the leaves. With their lively eyes and playful nature, they bring colour and energy to the cool mountain jungle of the Virunga Mountains.

The golden monkey lives in social groups that are constantly on the move. They jump effortlessly from branch to branch, picking young bamboo shoots and communicating with soft sounds and expressive gestures. Their graceful movements and curious nature make them a fascinating subject for photography and observation.

This photo collection shows the vibrancy and beauty of golden monkeys in their natural habitat: from subtle portraits to dynamic scenes among the bamboo. It is a tribute to the diversity of Mgahinga - a park where golden monkeys and mountain gorillas live side by side, and where every encounter offers a glimpse of the richness of Africa's mountain forests.
