What a beautiful bridge, and what craftsmanship to build AND maintain it. In this photo you can clearly see that the steel is fastened with rivets. In this tower alone, the plating is fastened with 600,000 rivets. These have already been replaced once by a more rustproof variant.
The architect of this magnificent steel suspension bridge over the Golden Gate strait is Joseph B. Straus and was built from January 1933 to May 1937. As the photo also shows, there is often fog around this bridge. After the construction of this bridge, it was still primed and appeared to be easily visible even in the fog. Therefore, it was decided to maintain this color. The bridge is 2.7 km long, 227 meters high a has a profile of clearance of about 1,280 x 70 meters. The driving deck is supported by 2 steel cables, which in turn consist of almost 28,000 small cables per cable. These 90 cm thick bundles are preserved annually by about 30 men with a roller and paint can. A total of 128,000 km of steel wire has been applied.
