I love the hammer smash painting technique. It involves some preparation, not least me wearing overalls and gloves and ensuring the space in my studio is covered ready in case of paint splashes. In this piece, I chose to start with a dark gold background, allowing some of the grain of the canvas to creep through. The technique involves creating individual puddles of paint. For the majority of the puddles, I used layers of white, blue and yellow with a hint of red. I also created a small number of puddles just largely featuring white and yellow. The act of hitting the paint with the hammer (more technical than it sounds but great fun) allows the paint to splatter across the canvas, the colours mingling as a result of the blow. This allows shades of pink and purple to also emerge in this painting. Eye-catching and stunning.
