Gold Abstract Painting: A Lonely Tree Glowing at the Edge of the Wood by Surreal Media

At the centre of this work stands a solitary tree, with a rounded crown in deep shades of turquoise and blue-green, positioned precisely where the light of the setting sun seems to radiate outwards. Around that tree, the sky swirls in broad bands of gold, cream, burgundy and turquoise, like a vortex of colour above the rolling, ochre-coloured fields. Close to the horizon, a narrow streak of raw, almost unpainted light glows – a detail one might almost overlook, but which seems to allow the entire work to breathe.

This painting arose from my fascination with landscapes and nature, and specifically with that one moment when the edge of a woodland is illuminated by the low-angled sun. I thought of the tranquillity of such'n place, of how a single tree can carry an entire landscape, and wanted to capture that feeling in a swirling explosion of colour rather than in a literal landscape.

The atmosphere is vibrant, warm and tactile: the warm gold and burgundy of the sky are balanced by the cooler turquoise of the tree and the distant hills, so that the whole feels both calm and energetic. It is colour that recharges you – joy, energy and wonder in a single image, a work to lose yourself in time and time again.

Although it looks like thick, applied paint, this is a digital artwork: the texture is built up to resemble deep brushstrokes and dragged layers, with warm light illuminating every edge of every stroke.

Hanging on the wall in a living room, dining room or office, this piece brings the tranquillity of a woodland edge indoors – a reminder of walks in nature, or simply a place to let your gaze rest for a moment.
