About ‘Goa Gajah Bali Indonesia’ by Bianca Hinnen

Goa Gajah in Bali Indonesia. Goa Gajah, also called Elephant Cave, is a cave located east of Peliatan near Ubud, in the middle of the Indonesian island of Bali. The shrine dates back to at least the 11th century and was discovered in 1922. The diversity of Hindu and Buddhist elements is striking.
Upon entering Goa Gajah, you enter a large "Wantilan. This is a welcome area. You will also find many ancient stone statues depicting various figures. Much of these statues have been restored to their former glory. The cave of Goa Gajah itself is not very deep. Inside the cave are 3 stone statues of gods wrapped in red cloths, yellow cloths and black cloths. The cave itself is black on the ceiling and walls from the soot caused by the many burning of incense. The coves show places where priests used to meditate.
