The glacier is located in the southeast of the country. Vatnajökull covers an area of approximately 8100 km² and therefore covers 8% of Iceland's acreage with an ice sheet that is up to 1000 meters thick.
In 2004, more than half of the glacier became part of the Skaftafell National Park, which since 2008 has been part of the Vatnajökull National Park, which was established at the time.
There is always a beautiful pattern to be found in the ice caps.
