The Belvedere Torso is a 1.59 m high fragmentary marble statue of a male nude, known in Rome from the 1430s, and prominently signed on the front of the base by "Apollonios, son of Nestor, Athener", which is not mentioned in ancient literature.
This is a work of art, after a painting by the old master Giuseppe Cesari. He was the chef of the studio in which Caravaggio trained after the younger painter's arrival in Rome.
Giuseppe Cesari (February 1568 - July 3, 1640) was an Italian Mannerist painter, also called Il Giuseppino and was called Cavaliere d'Arpino because he was founded by his patron Pope Clement VIII as Cavaliere di Cristo. He was frequently visited in Rome by both Clement and Sixtus V. He was the head of the studio in which Caravaggio trained when the younger painter arrived in Rome.
