The Great Skin Fattening Angle is already mentioned in 1281. The district was situated on a wide bend in the Scheldt. Although located outside the 12th-century ramparts, this area was part of the St. John's parish and belonged to Ghent's Schependom. Together with part of the Sint-Pietersdorp, the area was incorporated into the late 13th century city walls of Ghent. From the middle of the 13th to the middle of the 16th century the tanners and skin fetters were active.
