The village of Stitswerd is located on Het Hoge Land in the province of Groningen. The houses and the church in the village lie on and around a mound. The village consists of four streets. Central in the village on the Stiel is the former presbytery, which now serves as the village hall. Most of the houses in the village date from before 1900. Georgius Church (after patron saint Joris of Cappadocia) stands at the edge of the village. The straight-sided hall church dates from the 13th century and was heavily rebuilt in the 15th and 19th centuries. The church has a plain interior and tombstones lie inside. The churchyard around the church is still in use, owned by the Protestant congregation and maintained by volunteers.
