The Moeraki Boulders, located on Koekohe Beach, are one of New Zealand's natural gems. These intriguing spherical rock formations attract visitors from all over the world thanks to their near-perfect shape and unique geological origin. The result of millions of years of sedimentation and erosion, these "giant balls" seem to emerge from the sand like eggs from another era.
Maori legends tell of these rocks being the remains of a mythical shipwreck, while science explains their creation by a process of crystallisation around a core. Their surface, marked by hexagonal cracks, resembles a tortoise shell. At sunrise or sunset, the golden light sublimates their enigmatic appearance, creating a magical atmosphere conducive to photography.
The beach itself, with its golden sand and gentle waves, adds to the enchanting setting. As well as admiring these natural sights, visitors can enjoy the local wildlife, including seabirds and the occasional seal. A must for nature lovers and those fascinated by geological mysteries.
