Gentoo penguin on a snowy slope in Antarctica by Nanda Bussers

A gentoo penguin is walking down a large, steep snow slope within a vertical composition. The animal is positioned centrally in the lower part of the image, surrounded by a vast white expanse. Higher up the slope, along an exposed edge of rock and earth, a small group of fellow penguins is visible, moving in single file. The bright, even light minimises harsh shadows and emphasises the graphic lines of the landscape. A observational image documenting the natural walking routes of penguins in the polar region.

Penguins of the Southern Ocean

During my journey to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica, I met the inhabitants of the south: penguins living in a world of ice, storms and endless open space.

What struck me most in their presence was their calm and naturalness amidst this extreme environment. Sometimes curious, sometimes touchingly vulnerable and sometimes almost comical in their movements, but always fully present in the moment.

With my camera, I sought not only portraits of animals, but small moments of connection and stillness. A penguin alone in the snow. Two animals huddled close together in the wind. Patterns of movement, light and stillness in the white landscape.

In this album, I have compiled a selection of encounters with, amongst others, king penguins, gentoo penguins and other inhabitants of the Southern Ocean. Images that, for me, are not just about wildlife, but also about resilience, gentleness and the extraordinary beauty of life at the edge of the world.
