About "Gendarmenmarkt Berlin - Schiller Fountain and French Cathedral"

by t.ART

About the artwork

The "Schillerbrunnen" is a monument to the poet Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805). It stands in a central location on Gendarmenmarkt, in front of the flight of steps leading to the former Royal Playhouse, now the Berlin Concert Hall.

The French Cathedral is actually not a church, but a tower. Together with the German Cathedral it decorates Berlin's most beautiful square, the Gendarmenmarkt.

Together with its twin brother, it flanks the Konzerthaus and decorates the Gendarmenmarkt. The French and German Cathedrals with their distinctive domed towers are the reason why Gendarmenmarkt is considered the most beautiful square in Berlin.

The name comes from the French dôme for dome. The French Cathedral owes its name to its construction history: in 1701, construction began on a church for the French Protestant community, which was completed in 1705. Numerous French Protestants, the Huguenots, fled from France to Prussia. With the Edict of Potsdam, Elector Frederick William granted them safe refuge in Prussia.

In 1785, Frederick II commissioned Karl von Gontard and then later Christian Ungers to add magnificent towers to the two churches. They are purely representative ornaments without any function.
