The gardenhibiscus is a plant from the Mallorca family (Malvaceae). The plant occurs naturally in a large part of Asia. It is the national flower of South Korea. This is one of the few Hibiscus species that can be planted in the garden in Belgium and the Netherlands because it is hardy.
The 5-10 cm wide flowers appear solitary in the leaf axils of the upper leaves on the young shoots. There are many cultivars of the gardenhibiscus with single, semi-double and double flowers. Flower colours can be white, blue, pink, red and purple.
The gardenhibiscus has relatively late leaves, usually in May, and in some years even in June. In sunny summers the shrub can flower from August to October, but in rainy summers the unopened buds can fall off. The plant does well in looser soil, in a sunny spot.
