About "Gadwall (Anas strepera)"

About the artwork

Krake ducks are closely related to the mallard duck and greatly increased in the Netherlands. It even occurs here and there in cities. It breeds much later in the spring than the mallard and likes to breed in marshes near very nutrient-rich water. Males have a brown head and a black abdomen with light brown tail tip. The rest of the body is grey with fine markings, best seen on the breast. The shoulder feathers are remarkably long and beige in colour and the bill grey-black. Females closely resemble the mallard. The white transom, white belly and orange bill are the main features to distinguish females from mallards. Gadwall ducks are mainly herbivores (leaves, stems and seeds), but some animal food is not foreign to them. Especially during the winter months, insects and, for example, molluscs are a rich addition to their diet. It is also possible that such food is partly eaten 'by accident', because, for instance, aquatic animals hide in the vegetation.
