About "Fungus Rock off the coast of Gozo"

by WeltReisender Magazin

About the artwork

Fungus Rock, also known as Il-Ġebla tal-Ġeneral, is a striking rock off the coast of Gozo in Malta. With its steep cliffs and exposed position at the entrance to Dwejra Bay, it acts as a natural sentry, defying wind and waves. The rock is famous for a special plant that once grew here - the so-called "Maltese mushroom plant" (Cynomorium coccineum). In the 17th century, it was considered a valuable remedy and was closely guarded by the Knights of the Order of Malta. Access to the rock was forbidden for a long time and only selected people were allowed to harvest the plant under strict safety precautions.

Today, Fungus Rock is a protected natural monument that epitomises the unspoilt nature of the Maltese islands. The sparse vegetation, the wild sea and the high waves crashing against the rocks create a dramatic atmosphere. Visitors to the island of Gozo can admire the rock from the nearby Dwejra area, often in combination with other sights such as the Azure Window (until its collapse in 2017) or the Dwejra Inland Sea. The Fungus Rock remains a symbol of the close connection between nature, history and legends of Malta and is a fascinating photo motif that reflects the rugged beauty of the Mediterranean island.
