Fruit market on Stonetown, Zanzibar, Tanzania
Photo taken during reporting trip Klaartje Jaspers, visiting Sauti za Busara film and music festival (Swahili: "Sounds of Wisdom"). You watch films, dance, and music from across the continent and the Arab world - ranging from traditional Taarab to the latest hip-hop - in old buildings.
Zanzibar is known for its rich botany, partly a pleasant by-product of a tragic history in which the island was dominated by powerful men from faraway lands who had seeds and cuttings imported from their countries of origin. As a result, Zanzibar is not only the famed "spice-island," but also has a huge collection of fruits. Think rambutts (a kind of sweet prickly lychee), jackfruit, cream apples, breadfruit and guavas, but of course also just pineapples, lemons, bananas and oranges.
