Dokkum, one of the oldest and best-preserved fortified towns in the Netherlands, is located in northern Friesland. The town is famous for its rich history, dating back to the early Middle Ages. Dokkum was granted city rights in 1298 and played an important role as a trading and fortress town. The town is best known for the murder of the missionary Boniface in 754, which made Dokkum an important place for pilgrims.

Dokkum's fortifications, with their characteristic star-shaped structure, are still clearly visible and are one of the main attractions. The bulwarks surround the historic town centre and offer great views of the canals and windmills. The city has two imposing windmills, De Hoop and Zeldenrust, which are reminders of the region's agricultural past.
