About Paysages urbains - Rick Van der Poorten Photography
As an independent and passionate photographer, my autonomous work focuses on the power and simplicity of black-and-white photography. By omitting colour, I focus entirely on light, form, line play and contrast, bringing architecture and urban structures to life.
I draw my inspiration from iconic masters such as Richard Avedon, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Vivian Maier. And last but not least: Stefan Vanfleteren.
The serenity and monumentality of buildings, but also the dynamism of urban landscapes, are a constant source of inspiration.I look for the hidden stories in the lines and textures of architectural objects, aiming to capture a timeless and pure vision of our built environment.
Rotterdam, the city where I was born, plays a big part in this. This city is steadily developing with new striking and unusual places and architecture. That process never bores and ensures that I can periodically be found somewhere in that city with my camera.
For my commercial work, I use colour as well as black-and-white, partly at the request of clients. Both for (business) portraits and landscapes for e.g. photo wallpaper, this often comes out better.
