Did you know that the Netherlands used to have a rail ferry for freight transport? Wagons went onto the boat at this point and then sailed across the former Zuiderzee, between Stavoren and Enkhuizen. This happened between 1899 and 1936. Because of the tides, a special system was developed to get the ferry and wagons that had to ride on it at the same level.
The ferry connection has been preserved and operates as a tourist attraction during the summer months, carrying passengers only.
