Folk art whale amidst waves and leaves (AI) (Scandinavian folklore, ocean, sea, cute)

by Natalie Bruns

This playful watercolour painting depicts a large blue whale that appears to be floating peacefully through decorative waves. Graceful flowers, leaves and folk-inspired patterns are incorporated around the whale, giving the painting a soft and narrative quality. The small white details on the whale and the subtle dots in the water add extra depth and lend the work a handcrafted feel. The friendly, closed eyes in particular make the whale endearing and serene.

The colour palette consists mainly of various shades of blue, ranging from deep ocean blue to light ice blue, combined with white, soft grey, beige and small accents of terracotta and warm red. This creates a fresh, tranquil atmosphere that feels both warm and cosy. The work evokes memories of the sea, distant travels, Scandinavian illustrations and gentle children’s stories.

This watercolour work is inspired by Scandinavian folklore, in which simple forms, graceful floral motifs and decorative birds come together to form a warm and narrative image. The style is deliberately playful and stylised, with soft colours and folkloric details reminiscent of traditional folk art. As a result, the work fits beautifully into a cosy, rustic or Scandinavian interior, but also in a child’s bedroom or creative space where softness and imagination take centre stage.

Within this folklore series, I have incorporated several animals, including fish, a fox, a cat, an alpaca, a deer, a butterfly and various owls. These works can be found in my personal shop under the album “creative mix”.

My love of animals and my interest in other cultures and art styles have inspired me to create this series of paintings using AI.
