Thistle butterflies have orange wings with black spots, and at the wing tips of the forewings a black area with white spots. On the underside of the hind wings are 5 round spots, which sometimes have a blue center and become eye spots. The underside is otherwise brown with white lines in a fine boxy pattern. The wingspan is 5 to 6 inches. The Thistle butterfly is somewhat similar to Fritillary butterflies due to its orange-black markings, but is easily distinguished by its black and white wing tips.
