About ‘First Contact, Last Barbecue’ by Retrotimes

This work is dry, absurd and razor-sharp at the same time. Two men sit silently opposite each other by a campfire in the desert. No panic, no sensation. Just chairs, denim overalls, a pickup truck in the background — and between them: an alien on a spit. As if this has happened a hundred times before. As if this is exactly what you do when something unknown literally falls out of the sky.

The power of this image lies in the total normalisation of the bizarre. The crashed spaceship lies carelessly in the sand, still glowing, but receives less attention than the fire. The men don't look shocked, curious or morally confused. They look like people who have experienced something, decided not to think about it too deeply, and are continuing with their evening.

Here, science fiction collides head-on with Americana. The unknown is not studied or revered, but approached practically. If you don't understand something, you might as well roast it. This makes the image both funny and uncomfortable. It raises questions about how we deal with the 'other', the unexpected, the unfit. Not with violence, but with careless matter-of-factness.

As a print, this image works as a sharp conversation starter. It is visually calm, almost classically constructed, but in terms of content, downright brutal. Perfect for people with a dry sense of humour, a love of absurdism and a healthy suspicion of grand narratives about progress and contact. This is not a sci-fi epic. At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

Is your order a gift for someone? We can create you a gift voucher that displays the artwork(s) you ordered, so you have something to give while the artwork is being printed. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
