About the artwork
Assam is a resource rich state in the North Eastern part of India. It is the connecting point for seven other states, hence a very important trade and cultural centre.
Its vedant landscape varies from hills to plain lands and was once a Kingdom ruled by the Atom kings of Yore.
The paddy fields and smiling faces of the simple and tenacious people have always fascinated me as a child. Bamboo, cane, timber, oil and the tropical forests across the state is rich in flora and fauna of the most extraordinary kind, including the rare one horned Rhino found here.
Some of my artworks are inspired by these elements and who can miss the tea gardens of Assam with Estates and the lifestyles of the discerning connoisseurs of these grand homes. Another aspect is the cuisine of Assam and the Tengda Mach or Fish cooked in a spicy and sour gravy is the staple of even the poorest home.
Another feature is the Tamil or beetle nut that has a pungent flavour eaten with beetle leaves and a swab of lime - the white stroke that you will see in my paintings are all inspires by these memories.
This painting tries to encapsulate all these and more through its colour and composition, hence the title ‘Fields of Assam’.
