ca. 1570
Peeter Baltens, a painter from the direct circle of Pieter Bruegel, played an important role in the Antwerp artists guild. He was also a poet and playwright (rederijker). On the stage in the middle of this fairground scene, a humorous play is being performed. The farce is about a man who, hidden in the basket of a pedlar, discovers that his wife is committing adultery with a clergyman.
