Where most travellers follow the A82 on the northwest side of the Great Glen and Loch Ness, you often find the gems on the other side. Rain fronts there collide with the mountains and drop their cargo on the slopes. Calm and lovely rivers then turn into raging torrents. And where those rivers erode softer rock between the harder ones, mighty waterfalls often arise. So too the Falls of Foyer where you can stand at a vantage point on the left where the water just comes back up. Photographing here was virtually impossible so we looked for a nice point a bit further on. The Lord of the Ring film was largely filmed in New Zealand but the Scottish Highlands would not have been out of place as a backdrop either. You can just imagine a few Hobbits on the rocky outcrop in the foreground. Or perhaps some bloodthirsty Orcs.
