The façade built to the design of Arnolfo di Cambio was demolished as early as 1588 to make way for a new façade in the Renaissance style. A lack of funds meant that it was never built and for centuries the cathedral had a simple brick west facade (similar to the facade of St. Laurens Basilica).
In 1864, they finally launched a competition to design a dignified facade for the cathedral. The exuberance of the design was strongly criticized because it would not fit with the older parts of the cathedral, the baptistery and the campanile. In the facade there are one large and two smaller rose windows. There is also a row of thirteen statues of saints. The three bronze portals were made between 1899 and 1903. Above these portals are mosaics by Niccolò Barabino.
