We surprised each other on a ridge in the mountains of northern Italy. The five-month-old animal was probably out alone for the first time. I came out of the low undergrowth against the wind, tracking wild grouse.
A unique meeting, where we looked each other straight in the eye and then both cautiously backed away. Not an ounce of aggression or fear, just respect between two top predators.
Many inhabitants of the Alps do not encounter a single wolf in their entire lifetime. The chance of such an encounter is truly very small.
