An encounter on the Tanzanian savannah
Standing in the middle of the tall grass of the Tanzanian savannah, an African elephant comes face to face with the viewer. Its ears are spread wide, its trunk stretches forward and its long, curved tusks catch the light. In the background, a second elephant grazes peacefully amongst the acacia trees, beneath a sky full of cumulus clouds. It is a moment of both tension and tranquillity: the power of the world’s largest land animal, and the calm of the herd surrounding it.
Character in every detail
The photograph was taken from close up and rendered in warm black and white. This draws all attention to what makes this animal so special: the deep wrinkles in the skin, the texture of the ears, the ridges of the trunk and the wise, watchful eye. The light sepia tone gives the image a timeless quality, like a portrait that could just as easily be fifty years old.
This is how it really comes into its own:
This image demands space. Displayed in a large format above a sofa, bed or sideboard, the elephant takes on an almost lifelike presence. The black and white blends effortlessly with natural materials such as wood, linen and stone, and with black, beige or warm earth tones. It suits a modern, Scandinavian, industrial or Japandi interior, and also lends an office, practice or hotel lobby a calm yet powerful ambience.
Aluminium (Dibond) or acrylic glass: for maximum sharpness and depth in the black-and-white image. Canvas: for a warmer, more painterly look. Wooden panel: enhances the natural, timeless character.
About the photographer
Erwin Floor photographs wildlife and landscapes, with an eye for light, atmosphere and the character of the animal. His work is intended for those who wish to bring nature into their home: not as a mere picture, but as an image that tells a story every day.
For years I traveled a lot to get (color) inspiration for my company and recorded the images with my camera. And now, after the sale of my company, I took the step to share my passion for color and image with you.
