The Accijnstoren is square and built of brick with natural stone bands. The tower has a swinging bell.
It was originally a sort of tax office. Imported goods had to be declared here, the excise this generated was an important source of income for the city.
The bridge on which the tower partly stands was once a swing bridge, which was replaced in 1903 by a drawbridge. Due to increasing traffic this has since disappeared.
In 1924 the tower was moved 4 meters because of the widening of the Bierkade.
