The European bald eagle is Europe's largest bird of prey and an impressive sight. With a wingspan of up to 2.5 metres and a powerful beak, it is an icon of strength and majestic calm. In this black-and-white photo, the intensity of its gaze is particularly apparent: sharp, observant and confident. The absence of colour highlights the texture of its plumage and the expression in its eyes, further emphasising the character of this bird.
Bald eagles mainly live near large lakes, rivers and coastal areas, where they hunt for fish and waterfowl. In the Netherlands, the species has been making a remarkable comeback in recent decades, thanks in part to conservation measures and an increase in suitable habitat.
