The Krämerbrücke is a landmark of the city of Erfurt. It is the longest continuously built and inhabited bridge in Europe. Originally, the 120 metre long Krämerbrücke was built with 62 narrow houses, which were later reduced to 32 houses. Of the two former bridgehead churches at either end of the bridge, the eastern Ägidienkirche still exists today.
Erfurt is the capital of the German state of Thuringia. In Erfurt Cathedral, which dates back to the 8th century, the theological originator of the Reformation, Martin Luther, was ordained a priest. Next to the cathedral is the Gothic Severi Church. Martin Luther lived as a monk in the Augustinian monastery. Medieval houses and shops can be found on the Krämerbrücke bridge over the Gera.
Erfurt has numerous other cultural and historical sights. The Petersberg Citadel, the fish market with the town hall, the Wenigemarkt and the entire medieval old town are also well-known and well worth a visit.
