Piran is one of the three port cities of Slovenia, which has only a small coastal strip of about 50 kilometres in Istria. Piran is located on Piran Bay, on a land point in the Gulf of Trieste, which is part of the Adriatic Sea.
Piran is one of Slovenia's tourist spots, which makes for a relatively high average income. Piran has a marina and small airport. The name Piran is derived from the Greek word pyros meaning 'fire'.
Piran is an old Mediterranean city with Italian influences courtesy of the Venetian era. A rich history can be found in the old town such as the narrow alleys, compact houses like the Venetian House (Benečanka), medieval architecture, an open-air museum, and the Duomo di San Giorgio.
There is also Tartinjev trg square, called Piazza Tartini in Italian, with the statue of Giuseppe Tartini, St Peter's Church and the harbour.
