El Pilar is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the centre of the Spanish city of Zaragoza. A popular place of pilgrimage for many Spaniards, it stands on a site where several churches have stood in the past.
The current cathedral was built between 1681 and 1872, in Spanish Baroque style, recognisable by its four large bell towers. The cathedral is located on a large square, Plaza de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, which can accommodate thousands of pilgrims. The cathedral has many chapels dedicated to various saints and the domes are decorated with frescoes painted by Goya. The late-gothic high altar is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin with one of the most famous altarpieces in Spain.
