The East Side Gallery is a piece of the Berlin Wall that was painted by 118 artists after that Wende in December 1989. In November 1989 the German artist Bodo Sperling, as spokesman for the board of the Bundesverband Bildende Künstler (Federal Association of Visual Artists), co-initiated the East Side Gallery as part of the discussions about the merger of the German art associations BBK and VBK in Berlin alongside Barbara Greul Aschanta, Jörg Kubitzky and David Monti.
