The Haleakala volcano on Maui, the second largest of around 100 Hawaiian islands, is the highest peak on the island at 3055 metres. The last eruption took place in 1790, so Haleakala is still considered active. The volcano lies at the centre of Haleakala National Park, which covers an area of 12,000 hectares. The park is open all year round, and a paved road leads to the summit. Numerous places on Maui offer bicycle tours that take you from the summit of Haleakala through the volcano national park to the coast. After the sunrise spectacle at the crater rim, equipped with bike, helmet and warm clothing, the tour descends from an altitude of over 3000 metres in serpentines for 60 kilometres. Allow around eight hours for this.
