About the artwork

The DC-3 is an aircraft manufactured by the American aircraft manufacturer Douglas Aircraft Company. As of 1935, 10,655 of them were built, plus 4,937 were built under license. The aircraft is still used for commercial flights in the 21st century. In addition, several flying clubs own an airworthy DC-3.

The RAF called the aircraft Dakota; the Americans spoke of Gooney Bird. Several types were in use with the US armed forces: C-47 (Skytrain), C-49, C-50, C-52, C-53 (Skytrooper), C-68, C-84, C-117; with the US Navy the aircraft was designated R4D.

The C-47 was officially registered in the Netherlands Aircraft Register by H.R.H. Prince Bernhard with the registration PH-PBA (Prince Bernhard Alpha).
The aircraft received the color scheme of Inspector General of the Armed Forces (IGK) and was equipped with the coat of arms of the Inspector General of the Armed Forces (IGK) which function H.R.H. Prince Bernhard first fulfilled. To this day, the IGK coat of arms adorns the PH-PBA confirming the long and historic relationship.
