About ‘Door to the Mystery - Rosslyn Chapel’ by Saranda in t Veld Fotografie

Rosslyn Chapel,

Not surprisingly, it was also used as the filming location for The Da Vinci Code, which centres on the search for the Holy Grail. Many people feel something special when they are there - a kind of time travel feeling.

This atmospheric photo shows the imposing entrance to the famous Rosslyn Chapel. Built in 1446, commissioned by William Sinclair, the chapel is known worldwide for its rich symbolism, mysterious sculptures and the countless theories attached to it - from the Templars to the Holy Grail.

The doorway is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, made of pink sandstone from the region, which has been beautifully weathered over the centuries. Above the wooden door, you can see skulls and grotesques worked into the stone - ornaments that were intended at the time as a reminder of the transience of life (memento mori) and to ward off evil spirits.

The rich details, the weathered textures of wood and stone, and the play of light and shadow give this image an almost cinematic feel. This picture is not only an ode to medieval craftsmanship, but also an invitation to wonder.
