About "Dockyard with keel of flagship the Seven Provinces"

About the artwork

The term The Seven Provinces comes from the alliance that was concluded on January 23, 1579 between the 7 rebellious northern regions of the Low Countries. This alliance is known as The Union of Utrecht. From this alliance emerged the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. It had to be a lasting alliance, if necessary for eternity. Therefore, the Union Treaty used a choice of words to emphasize both the unity of the union and the equality of the various territories. All 7 parts of the Union were therefore referred to as 'provinces'. From 1642 onwards, ships of various Dutch Admiralties were named after The Seven Provinces, including many flagships. Michiel de Ruyter's flagship during the Four-Day Sea Battle was also named De Zeven Provinciën. The Royal Netherlands Navy has continued this tradition. A series of atmospheric images of this impressive piece of craftsmanship before the ravages of time get their hold on these nostalgic pictures.
