Diorama of a slave dance, Gerrit Schouten, 1830
In the dance tent there is a du going on, a role play with music and dance that was performed on the plantations. Both the players and the spectators were slaves. The leading part was for the afrankeri, the narrator of the story (the woman on the far left). The man in the red suit on the right plays the king. Europeans in Suriname loved this kind of folklore. They bought Schouten's viewing boxes as a souvenir.
