Dieppe (Normandy: Dgieppe) is a French city, located in the Seine-Maritime department and in the Haute-Normandie region. Dieppe is located at the mouth of the Arques River in the English Channel. The name is thought to have originated around the year 1000 when the river flowing into the Channel there was called the Diepe by the Vikings, because of its depth.
During the Nine Years' War, Diepe was attacked on 23 July 1694 by an Anglo-Dutch squadron led by Admiral Lord John Berkeley of Stratton and Lieutenant Admiral Philips van Almonde. During the 36-hour bombardment of six warships and nine galleons, the port and town were badly damaged.[1] On 19 August 1942, the Raid on Dieppe, an Allied landing that ended disastrously, took place here.
