Tulips can be found in the wild from North Africa and southern Europe to northwestern China. The original distribution range of the genus stretches from the Iberian Peninsula through North Africa to Greece, the Balcony, Turkey, the Middle East, Syria, Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, Iran, Ukraine, southern Siberia, Mongolia and northwest China.[2] However, the greatest diversity is found in three mountain ranges in Central Asia: the Pamir, the Tianan and Hindu Kush. The climate in all three mountain regions is characterised by a cold winter that can cause vernalisation, a long spring with cold nights and a dry summer. Such a climate is ideal for tulips.
