About the artwork

The Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen form a nature reserve in the municipality of Oisterwijk of over 750 ha in the National Landscape Het Groene Woud. Over 400 ha of this area is owned by the Vereniging Natuurmonumenten.

The Oisterwijk woods and fens are centrally located in Brabant at a short distance from Tilburg and not far from 's Hertogenbosch or Eindhoven. The area is considered to be one of the best known hiking areas in this province. To the east it joins (almost) the Kampina, also owned by Natuurmonumenten. To the west the area connects to the area "Oude Hondsberg, Ter Braakloop en Galgeven" which is owned by the Brabants Landschap.

The origin of the fens is not entirely certain in all cases, but since there are both brook valleys and drifting sand areas in the immediate vicinity, it is often assumed that there are both extinguished layers and river valleys. Strange in any case is the considerable variation between the fens.

The fens are almost all very picturesque and attractive because of their heavily wooded, jagged or straight banks, the occurrence of islets and the vegetation with the very fragrant gale and water lilies. Many of the fens are considerable in size and bank length. There are characteristic and often rare plants such as marsh warbler hay, beetle fern and weeds and fragile carpets of peat moss.
