A thawing drop, encased in a collar of ice through which the low winter sun shines. If you look closely, you can see the last thin filaments of ice holding the drop. A few seconds after the picture was taken, the drop fell and this image was gone forever.
Transience immortalised in a warm photograph of a cold environment. The details in the ice and the refraction of sunlight in ice and water make this photo special to me.
Technically, focusing in this mode of photography is challenging. Because the drop is small and magnified, focusing is done by moving the camera and lens manually. This listens so closely that breathing is impossible while focusing and taking the picture. A relaxation exercise for the photographer who is rewarded with an image like this.
The photos was taken in Waalre (NL) in winter 2025.
