Deer (Cervidae) are a family of ruminant, even-toed mammals characterized by the antlers of the male deer. A male deer is called deer or buck and a female deer is called doe. However, in the case of roe deer, one usually speaks of buck and goat, and in the case of reindeer and elk, of bull and cow. There are about forty species in 16 genera and four subfamilies.
The two main subfamilies within the cervids are Cervinae (true deer), which includes the red deer and fallow deer; and Capreolinae (sham deer), which includes the reindeer, roe deer, mule deer, and elk. In all species except the Chinese water deer, the males form new antlers each year that are shed in winter.
Deer play an important role in mythology, religion and literature. Cultural expressions in which deer are a subject date back to the first cave paintings. Deer are also an important theme in heraldry. Their economic importance comes from the use of their meat, their hides to make buckskin, and their antlers. Hunting deer has been a popular activity since the Middle Ages.
