About "De Oversteek Nijmegen."

by Nicky Kapel

About the artwork

De Oversteek, also known as Stadsbrug, is a bridge for vehicular traffic across the river Waal, at Nijmegen. The road over the bridge has been named General James Gavinsingel since 2016. The bank connection was opened in November 2013 and is located west of the two existing Nijmegen bridges. On the south side, the bridge connects to Verlengde Energieweg, on the north side to Graaf Alardsingel.

De Oversteek is part of the new city route S100, which was completed when the bridge was opened to traffic on 24 November 2013.

Remembrance Waaloversteek 1944
To commemorate the 1944 Waal Crossing by members of the US Army 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) of the 82nd Airborne Division, the bridge and the road over it bears the name 'De Oversteek' (Eng: The Crossing) This name was officially adopted by the city council in June 2009. Present at the opening were two World War II veterans and relatives of the 48 soldiers killed in action.

As a tribute to these men, the bridge is equipped with 48 pairs of light poles that light up pair after pair from south (Nijmegen) to north (Lent) after the city lights are switched on, at the pace of a slow march.[10] This work of light art, called Lights Crossing, was devised by Atelier Veldwerk. Since 19 October 2014, as a daily tribute, every evening at sunset at least one veteran walks the so-called Sunset March across the bridge during the lighting of the 48 lights one by one.
