The "Lange Jan" usually refers to the Tower of Our Lady in Amersfoort. This tower is also known as the "Lange Jan" because of its imposing height. The Tower of Our Lady is the tallest church tower in Amersfoort and a striking feature of the city.
The tower is about 98 metres high and has 346 steps to the top. It is possible to climb the tower, and from the top you have a great view of the city of Amersfoort. Construction of the tower began in 1444 and lasted until 1470. Originally, the tower was part of the Church of Our Lady, but this church was demolished in the 19th century. However, the tower was preserved.
The tower houses a carillon with 62 bells, making it one of the largest carillons in the Netherlands.
