The winter mushroom,
(Flammulina velutipes, synonym: Collybia velupites) is a mushroom belonging to the family Physalacriaceae.
winter mushroom usually grows in groups of several mushrooms. The fungus is saprotrophic and lives on trunks and stumps of deciduous trees such as elm, alder and willow. It is a typical winter mushroom found from November to March. The often smooth and slimy cap is 2-10 cm wide and has a honey-yellow to red-brown colour.
