Cup moss (Cladonia fimbriata) and star moss (Polytrichum commune)
Very small stalks are hidden among the starwort or hair moss in this photo. These stalks, called green cup moss are a variety of lichen.
Lichens are not only mosses but also fungus. It is a cooperation of 2 species in 1 being. A symbiosis, in other words. Something very special when you consider that the species usually evolve away from each other like a tree and not toward each other. In lichens, the fungus and moss cannot evolve without each other. The moss (an algal), through photosynthesis, provides energy and food with which the fungus feeds. The fungus protects the alga and returns minerals.
With its black and white tones, the photo very nicely captures the details of the tiny mosses. The hilly shapes give a playful effect. The overall picture offers a beautiful macro view in our miniature world with fascinating species from our nature.
