Windmill De Walvisch in Schiedam is one of the tallest tower mills in the world and owes its name to the Greenland whaling industry. The tower mill was built in 1794. The Schiedam mills were suppliers for gin and malt wine production.
The kruirad or crown wheel is used to turn the sails on the wind.
The Walvisch is now a museum mill.
