Cornelis Evertsen, lieutenant admiral of Zeeland, Nicolaes Maes, 1680 oil on canvas, h 148cm × w 124cm.
Cornelis Evertsen the Youngest (1642-1706) came from a true seafaring family. His father, like himself and his uncle, was a lieutenant admiral. All three served with the Zeeland Admiralty at Middelburg, an important part of the Dutch navy. Evertsen was an ardent supporter of the Oranges, as evidenced by the sash he wears. The cannon and seabattle refer to his position.
